KIA SPORTAGE NAMED A 2017 MUST TEST DRIVE VEHICLE BY AUTOTRADER

Award-Winning, Fourth-Generation Sportage CUV Recognized for Sophisticated Design, Refined Premium Interior and Intelligent Packaging
  • The 2017 Sportage stands out in the hot-selling compact CUV segment
  • Cutting-edge design, engaging driving dynamics, advanced driver assistance systems, and premium materials take Sportage to the head of the class
IRVINE, Calif., March 24, 2017– The 2017 Kia Sportage has been named one of Autotrader’s 2017 Must Test Drive vehicles.  The prestigious consumer-focused program showcases the best new vehicles shoppers need to experience prior to making a purchase.  Award winners are selected by Autotrader’s editorial experts and have the potential to change the way a consumer perceives an entire segment or brand.
“Winning an Autotrader 2017 Must Test Drive Award is further testament to the transformation of the Kia brand and marks another accolade for the Sportage, our longest-running nameplate,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning Kia Motors America (KMA).  “Sportage balances world-class craftsmanship and outstanding design, while delivering a host of standard features at a low starting price.”
To be honored as a Must Test Drive award winner a vehicle must be of the current or next model-year and available to purchase at the time of the awards announcement, have a base price under $75,000 and offer a significant value.  Vehicles also must score no lower than a 3.5 on Autotrader’s five-point scale.
“The redesigned Kia Sportage is on our Must Test Drive list mainly because it's so good at so many things.  The Sportage has a wide range of prices and options, has a unique look and comfortable interior. The 240 horsepower Sportage SX turbo is simply a blast to drive, something we were not expecting from a small SUV,” said Brian Moody, executive editor at Autotrader.
The 2017 Sportage, an IIHS Top Safety Pick + (when equipped with optional front crash prevention) wraps a contemporary design around a structure that is both stiffer and more spacious than ever before.  Advanced driver assistance technologies, significant suspension and steering improvements, and available intelligent AWD improve the Sportage’s driving dynamics while premium materials create a class-up experience.  The 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four found on the FWD SX Turbo makes 240 horsepower (237 on AWD models) and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, while LX and EX trims use a normally aspirated 2.4-liter engine that produces 181 horsepower and 175 lb.-ft. of torque.

Kia Motors to enter India in 2019, $1.1 billion plant to come up in Andhra Pradesh

NEW DELHI: Kia Motors, a group company of South Korean auto giant Hyundai, is all set to enter the highly-competitive Indian car market by investing $1.1 billion to build its first factory in India.

Kia Motors said it plans to start production at the factory in Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh in the second half of 2019. The new factory will have an annual capacity of three lakh vehicles.

Times of India was the first one to report on Kia's India plans as early as August, 2016.

The company will sell a mini sedan and a compact SUV to begin with, and will expand its portfolio over time.
Kia hopes to ride on the growth momentum of the Indian car market.

Group company Hyundai has been in India for the past 20 years and is the second largest carmaker here, behind Maruti Suzuki which has a tie-up with Japan's Suzuki Motors. It produces cars at a factory near Chennai in Tamil Nadu and has an annual production capacity of around 7 lakh cars.

Senate bill seeks to extend driver's license validity for up to 10 years

A bill seeking to extend the validity of Philippine driver's licenses for up to 10 years has been approved, with amendments, on its second reading.
If it pushes through, Senate Bill 1449 will allow for the 10-year validity of driver's licenses, provided the holder did not incur any infractions during the initial five-year period prior to renewal. Simply put: If you're a responsible driver who follows the rules, you're eligible for 10 years of validity.
That's not all. The bill also calls on the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to develop an online application process for the renewal of both professional and non-professional driver's licenses. Less time waiting in line and more time behind the wheel? Pinch us, we must be dreaming. You can read the bill in whole here.
Senator Grace Poe, one of the bill's sponsors, expressed her sentiments over the bill passing this second reading: "We are inching closer to approval of this measure that will save drivers millions of man-hours otherwise spent in queuing to get the permit to operate a motor vehicle. Konting push na lang!
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) already extended the validity of driver's licenses from three years to five late last year. If anything, Senate Bill 1449 is more reason for Pinoy motorists to keep themselves in check behind the wheel. Are you eligible for the 10-year validity?

Ford issues two recalls for roughly 3,000 vehicles

The largest involves a call-back of about 2,500 2017 Explorer SUVs, F-150 and Super Duty pickups. The affected vehicles have an improper weld between the driver seat back and the manually operated seat back recliner mechanism that may fail to comply with certain federal motor vehicle safety standards.
The vehicles include:
• 2017 Ford F-150s built at Dearborn Assembly Plant from Dec. 11 2016 to Dec. 16, 2016.
• 2017 F-150s built at Kansas City Assembly Plant Dec. 8, 2016 to Dec. 9, 2016.
• 2017 Ford Explorers built at Chicago Assembly Plant Dec. 9, 2016 to Dec. 10, 2016.
• 2017 Super Duty trucks built at Kentucky Truck Plant Dec. 19, 2016 to Jan. 19, 2017.
• 2017 Super Duty trucks built at Ohio Assembly Plant Dec. 23, 2016 to Jan. 19, 2017.
The second issue involves about 551 2017 F-150, F-250 to F-550 trucks equipped with an aftermarket chrome door handle cover that could cause the handle to unlatch during a side impact.
Ford said 551 kits for the handle cover were sold through Ford dealerships. Dealers are responsible for contacting customers, and the automaker will also publish an "awareness message" in case an affected vehicle is brought in for unrelated service.
Both problems will be fixed for free. Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries with either issue.

Hyundai PH bags Global Distributor of the Year award

The recently-held Hyundai Global Distributors Convention in Seoul turned out to be a very eventful one for Hyundai Asia Resources Inc. (HARI), as the company managed to walk away with the event's prestigious Global Distributor of the Year award.
This is the second time HARI has won Global Distributor of the Year, with the first win coming in 2010. The company saw record-breaking growth figures spearheaded by March, 2017 sales of 3,371 units—HARI's highest monthly output in its 15-year history. This managed to push first quarter sales up to 8,841 units, which is an 18% increase compared to the same period in the year prior.
Accepting the award for the company was Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo, who proudly declared that HARI is ready to take its business to the next level: "We are ready to bring new business and economic value, to take our partnership with Hyundai Motor Company to greater heights, and to strengthen the Hyundai brand presence in the ASEAN. Together, with the Hyundai Motor Company, we raise the Hyundai banner strong and proud in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.”
HARI's recent sales performance further builds on Hyundai's position as the third top-ranking carmaker in the Philippines, the company says. Is this a sign of even bigger things to come for the Korean manufacturer?

Senator: Suspend Anti-Distracted Driving law enforcement

No one's in disagreement over why the Anti-Distracted Driving law is in place. Basically, Republic Act 10913 was passed to prevent accidents caused by motorists fiddling with their devices behind the wheel. It makes perfect sense. But with all the fuss authorities are making over 'line of sight,' have they lost track of the law's essence?
If your answer to the question above is yes, you're not alone. In a Facebook post made earlier today, Senator JV Ejercito called on the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to suspend the Anti-Distracted Driving law's implementation until the two agencies can sort out all the confusion currently surrounding its enforcement. Read his post below:

Senator Ejercito makes some very valid points. One is that placing electronic devices on mounts is far safer than having to take your eyes off the road every now and then to check on Waze. The law in its current form prohibits motorists from placing mounts—or basically anything for that matter—on the dashboard and windshield, meaning they will have to look down to check for directions.
Maintaining visibility of the road ahead of you is the entire point of having a phone mount. It just seems silly to require drivers to mount their devices at chest level. As Senator Ejercito says: "Mas delikado pa yumuko (it's more dangerous to look down)! Every second that the driver’s eyes are on the road counts."
Will the DOTr, LTO and other concerned government agencies heed the Senator's call? One thing's for sure: There are still plenty of kinks in the Anti-Distracted Driving law that need to be addressed.

Honda PH offering owners new extended warranty program

Do you own a Honda? Then you'll be glad to know that the company is now offering a new extended warranty program called "Honda Protect Plus," which minimizes the chance you'll be shocked by sudden expenses past the usual warranty period.
Honda Protect Plus covers all models available in the Philippines. Through the program, you can get an additional two years of warranty coverage or an additional 40,000km (whichever comes first), which kicks in after the standard three-year (or 100,000km) warranty comes to an end.
The carmaker recommends applying for the extension, as it guarantees your vehicle will be worked on by certified technicians using only genuine Honda parts. What's more, Honda says cars under Honda Protect Plus command higher resale value in the event owners decide to sell.
Honda Protect Plus coverage begins at P12,300 for the Brio. Interested owners can inquire at their local Honda dealership for more information. If you're the forgetful type, or in case you plan on selling your vehicle somewhere down the line, this might be a program worth looking into.

Top-5 cheap cars for track-day warriors YOU DON'T HAVE TO SPEND A MINT TO DRIVE LIKE A MILLION BUCKS

Track days, and long road trips, are the two best ways to get to know your car. But purchasing a car for the track can be a daunting task, especially since you’ll be beating on it mercilessly and it needs to last. Powertrain layout, maintenance and even daily drivability could be a concern. With that in mind, here are five good starting points for a track car, all commonly for sale at less than $10,000.

The front-engine, non-turbo 944s are a great base for a track or race car.
Porsche 944
Clean examples of early non-turbo Porsche 944s can be picked up in the $5,000-$10,000 range. They don’t make a ton of power -- they’re in the 140- to 200-hp range -- but they only weigh 2,600 pounds or so. Plus, the engine’s in the right place, driving the correct wheels. They also have strong brakes and a nearly 50-50 weight ratio. Check out a few nice examples on eBay Motors right now.
Early Miatas can be had for well under the $10,000 mark.

Mazda Miata
No track-day list would be complete without a Mazda Miata. It’s the ubiquitous driver’s car for a reason. Miatas are easy to handle, lightweight and get great mileage for those long drives to the track. They’re momentum cars, meaning it’s more important to keep your speed up through corners. Stronger cars can make up for slow corners with power, but the Miata forces an enthusiast to drive well. Shifter and clutch feel are also near-perfect, speed parts are readily available and consumables like brakes and tires are relatively inexpensive.
The GTI is a great daily driver, and will keep up on the track.

Volkswagen Golf GTI
A front-wheel-drive GTI from the 2000s can be had for less than $10K, and we’ve seen good examples for as low as $6,000. Besides being a great daily driver, the GTI is easy to handle on the track and will keep up with most of the cars on this list. The MK5 version (2003-2009) delivered 197 hp from a turbocharged four; both the six-speed manual and dual-clutch automatic are good. Check out some nice examples here.
The rear-wheel-drive BMW 328i can get around a track with ease, has great steering feel and its badge carries weight.
BMW 3-Series
Like the GTI, BMW 3-Series cars from the 2000s are great, cheap track cars and have a little badge cachet, to boot. We’d suggest rear-wheel drive and a manual, of course. You’ll also have the choice of two or four doors, which could add some utility to the equation; the end result could be a good daily driver, as well. The straight-six-powered cars are silky smooth and easy to find, plus steering feel is off the charts. Check out a few examples here.
The Mazda RX-8 wasn't a great follow up to the gorgeous RX-7, but it was quick, light and rear-wheel drive.
Mazda RX-8
Early RX-8s come in under the $5,000 mark and later ones (2008-2012) straddle the $10,000 line. These aren't overly powerful (232 hp), but like the Miata, RX-8s are about building and keeping momentum. They look great and sound great with the teeny, 1.3-liter rotary engine, but they’re a bit more fragile and harder to work on than your average front-engine, rear-drive, piston-engined vehicle. They were the last hurrah for the rotary engine in the U.S., and we think that’s worth something, too.

Ford names Jim Hackett as new CEO in push to build self-driving cars

Carmaker confirms boss of its driverless cars division will take helm as Mark Fields exits after just under three years

Ford has named the head of its driverless cars division as its chief executive in a sudden regime change, as the company that pioneered the assembly line looks to the next stage of the industry’s evolution.
The Detroit-based carmaker said Mark Fields, who has run the company since July 2014, was retiring with immediate effect amid an overhaul of senior management.
Fields will be replaced by Jim Hackett, who runs the smart mobility unit that houses Ford’s autonomous vehicle projects and is close to the executive chair, Bill Ford Jr.
Ford Jr, great-grandson of the company’s founder Henry, said Hackett was a “transformational leader” who would modernise the business by exploring areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics and 3D printing.
He and Hackett also emphasised the need to make decisions faster, with Ford Jr hinting at more centralised control as he referred to “breaking the hierarchy down”.
Despite posting a pre-tax profit of $10.4bn (£8bn) last year, the company has fallen out of favour on Wall Street and its stock has declined by 37% during Fields’ tenure.
This year it was overtaken in stock market value by newcomer Tesla, which specialises in electric cars and is testing driverless vehicles, as investors focus on the future of transport.
The 114-year-old company has also been outpaced by traditional rivals such as General Motors, which posted rising first-quarter profit this year, while Ford’s earnings slumped.
Ford Jr said the decision that Fields would retire was reached on Friday but admitted there had been discussions for some time.
Fields, whose pay deal last year was worth $22m (£17m), is in line for a payoff worth $14.3m, a sum he would not have been entitled to had he left the company under circumstances other than voluntary retirement.
The choice of Hackett as his successor indicates a firmer commitment to driverless vehicles from the company whose founder introduced the assembly line production method that dominated the 20th century.
In February, Ford announced a $1bn investment over five years in the artificial intelligence software company Argo AI, as part of its attempt to make driverless cars a reality.
It hopes to have a driverless car on the road by 2021, and aims to capitalise on its progress in the emerging field by licensing the technology to other companies.
Analysts say the appointment of Hackett suggests Ford wants to burnish its reputation among investors by showing that it can embrace technological change more quickly than it has done.
“If we’ve learned anything from the phenomenon of [Tesla chief executive] Elon Musk, it’s that Wall Street likes a tech/innovation guy,” said Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst at Edmunds.
“Putting the head of their mobility division at the helm indicates Ford is trying to send a strong message to stockholders that the company intends to be a dominant player in the future of mobility.”
Hackett was cagey about whether Ford might tweak its planned $4.5bn spend on electric cars and $1bn on autonomous vehicles, one of the only questions he did not answer during a lengthy press conference about his appointment.
The 62-year-old does not bring a wealth of technological expertise to the role, having previously spent 30 years with office furniture company Steelcase, followed by a spell as interim athletic director at the University of Michigan.
But he has been credited with a free-thinking approach in both positions and was described by Ford Jr as a “futurist” who was well connected in Silicon Valley.
As chief executive of Steelcase, he moved the company away from traditional office equipment, tailoring new products towards a growing trend for open-plan working.
At the University of Michigan, he won praise for convincing former San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh to take on the university’s underperforming American football team, the Wolverines.

How soon will we see driverless cars on the streets?

Developing driverless – or autonomous – vehicles is a nascent but fast-growing industry, with Ford expecting to roll out a driverless car by 2021 and some analysts estimating there will be 10m cars with some form of autonomy by 2020.
That’s not much in the context of more than 1bn cars worldwide, but represents rapid progress from a standing start just a few years ago. In the US, the race pits traditional auto firms such as Ford and General Motors against technology-focused newcomers, such as Uber and Google, through its Waymo spinoff company.
Also in the running is Tesla, led by futurist billionaire Elon Musk, an auto firm that bridges the divide between Detroit and Silicon Valley by specialising in electric and autonomous cars.

While Ford’s management shake-up might suggest it is lagging behind, a study by Navigant Research recently put the company top of the pile among firms working on the technology.

Despite the high-profile nature of efforts by technology firms, the study’s top six rated firms were traditional carmakers, with Ford followed by General Motors, Renault-Nissan and Daimler.
The UK has started laying the groundwork to become a testing bed for the technology, with MPs consulting on a regulatory regime designed to ready the country for a driverless future.
Opinion is divided about when the first consumer models will hit the streets, despite some rumours suggesting Tesla will release a model with a level of autonomy by 2018.
Sceptics have pointed to uncertainty around the regulatory regime governing matters such as insurance, while the technology has not been without some concerning teething problems.

BMW’s future lies in electrification, car connectivity CEO SAYS COMPANY WILL ALWAYS OFFER STEERING WHEELS

BMW will focus on leadership in electric drivetrains and connectivity rather than increasing vehicle sales, CEO Harald Krueger said.
While the automaker will continue to boost global sales, it has no fixed volume targets for 2020 or 2025, Krueger said.
Last year, BMW built a record 2.37 million BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce cars and light trucks. Its sales of electrified vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, were 62,000, with sales of 25,500 for its full-electric i3. BMW aims to sell 100,000 electrified vehicles this year.
Press reports suggest BMW plans to reach annual global sales of 3 million by 2020, which would imply an average 6 percent annual growth based on 2016 volume.
Krueger said success will depend on being a technology leader in growing segments such as electrification and connectivity rather than sales volume, although BMW is adding more production capacity throughout its global network.

BMW needs to be the most attractive employer “because you need the best people to lead in technology,” Krueger told reporters at the company’s headquarters Thursday.
Battery powered cars are not the only solutions to designing and engineering zero or low-emissions vehicles in future, he said. Fuel-cell vehicles also will be crucial.
“With Toyota, we are working on a new generation of fuel-cell vehicles. Last year, we put on the road a small test fleet based on the 5-series Gran Turismo. In 2021 we plan a small series of the next step in fuel-cell technology,” he said.
Demand for fuel-cell vehicles is not advancing particularly fast because they require even more infrastructure, notably refueling stations, than EVs, but they will eventually, so BMW needs to be ready, Krueger said. A partnership with Toyota is helping BMW to advance fuel-cell technology and to share costs, but it is impossible to predict how sales of fuel-cell cars will play out by 2030, he said.
Autonomous driving
BMW also needs partnerships to develop light vehicles with autonomous driving features so it is cooperating with suppliers, Krueger said.
“We are not the best in making radars and vision controls, so we work with Mobileye," Krueger said. "We do not make chips, so we cooperate with Intel. We have just taken on board Delphi to cooperate on software and system knowledge.”
However, suppliers will never offer a comprehensive autonomous driving solution because automakers will retain computing power and software as a core competence. For a self-driving vehicle to have BMW or Mini handling characteristics, or for a Rolls-Royce to feel like being on a “flying carpet,” you need an automaker’s expertise, Kruger said.
“We are in the premium business. We sell design and emotion, not just a way of getting from point A to B,” he added.
BMW will always offer a steering wheel, leaving the driver to decide when to grab control of the wheel and pedals. “You will never see a robo-taxi from BMW,” Krueger said.
BMW said on May 2 that it will start production of its iNext full-electric car with self-driving features in 2021 at its plant in Dingolfing, Germany. The iNext will be capable of Level 4 autonomous driving, classified by the Society of Automotive Engineers as "high automation" but offering the chance for a human driver to intervene. It is one step below Level 5 "full automation" in which no steering wheel is necessary because the vehicle can carry out all the tasks of a human driver.
BMW this year will test 40 cars with Level 3 or "conditional automation." The cars now require so much computing power that the trunk is full of computers. “This is not what a customer wants," Krueger said.
Brexit, diesel fears
Krueger said he hopes the United Kingdom and the European Union can reach a pragmatic compromise over trading conditions following Britain’s withdrawal from the bloc.
"On the manufacturing side, we are flexible. We build many Minis in the Netherlands but the U.K. is an important market for BMW and is Mini’s biggest global market," he said.
Krueger reiterated that E.U. targets to drastically reduce CO2 emissions by 2020-21 cannot be achieved without diesel engines, which are 15 percent to 20 percent more efficient than gasoline engines in terms of CO2. "You need to invest in clean diesels, and Euro 6 engines are clean diesels," he said.

BMW forecasts that up to 25 percent of its vehicle sales may be electrified vehicles by 2025, in line with most predictions for industry volumes. Even if BMW reaches that figure, 75 percent of its sales will be cars with an internal combustion engine with a percentage of diesels in the mix, Krueger said.
BMW's electrified vehicle sales reached 25,000 in the first quarter, or about 3 percent of company volume, up from less than 1 percent in the same period last year, Krueger said.
He did not speculate on the outlook for BMW's sales of diesel-equipped models but said the day will eventually come when the costs of continually lowering diesel emissions will be too high.
BMW's share of diesel sales in some markets is still increasing. "If you drive 30,000 or 50,000 kilometers (18,000-31,000 miles) a year, a diesel still makes the difference in the cost of ownership," Krueger said.
"BMW aims to be electrification, connectivity leader" originally appeared on Automotive News on 5/22/17.
